Most of the early tunnels used "cat" names.  Many of these, such as the Cougar, Linx, and Tiger, were built in the late '60's and very early '70's.  The Tiger actually set some records, but at this time it became apparent that V-bottoms were going to be more popular.  So, the first V-bottom was made using a Cougar deck and a V hull - this (the first "V" name) was the Ventura, one of the best V-bottom hulls ever made and a revolutionary design for its day.  It is easy to see that the forward part of this hull is shaped like sponsons were once there.
