'75 Evinrude Lower Unit Slipping

Hi .

You have a great board here,
Wonder if you could help me with a problem. Small one I hope. hehe
Was headed for the boat dock this weekend. The lower end started slipping.
Last 3/4 of a mile it was kinda jumpy when I got to the dock it gave up completely. When I got home I drained the gear oil. It was kinda milky.
On the magnet there was metal shavings.
Question is ,  Is it better to find a used lower end or new parts for inside.
I never have been into it so aint even sure what’s inside.

Thanks for any help.

Brett in Idaho.

Brett,

When the gearcase was slipping or jumping, it was probably a cheap repair.  Sounds like now, you have an expensive repair.  There are many places to get used lower units.  A place that I use is called Outboard Recycle.  They are based in Alabama.  If you cannot find them on the web, call our shop and I will get you their phone number.   They specialize in used "hard to get" parts and their prices are fabulous.  Check with some of your local places and see if there are any used parts.  I think if you rebuild it, the cost for new parts will exceed what you could get a complete used gearcase for.
