Yamaha 4 Stroke Servicing

Hi,

I am in the market for a new boat and motor. I am looking at a Yamaha 115 hp 4 stroke. The salesman is telling me that after 20 hours of use the motor needs to be serviced. He claims they need to pull the powerhead for some reason at a cost to me of about $600.00. Is this true? Thanks for your time.

John:

I don't know how to say this, but I think your dealer is trying to pull a fast one on you. There is no reason whatsoever, to pull the powerhead on a Yamaha 115 four stroke after 20 hours service. What he is up to, I have no clue. I would suspect that there is something broken in this motor and they need the time to fix it before they sell it to you. Why they would charge you for this, I have no idea. Either that or it sounds like they are a little crooked. The reason I can say all of this, is my Father has a Yamaha 115 on his personal boat which I have maintained for the last 3 years. This motor has run perfectly with little more than just oil changes once a year. Eventually, it will need a valve adjustment, but we are talking after several hundred hours. My advice would be to shop another dealer for both opinions on this subject and maybe a fair deal. Good luck on your purchase
